Friday, October, 27th, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. (PT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in California. Bill Dotson, the requester, submitted the following information: “Vehicle is Polaris Razor. It has a broken winch. The razor is stuck on some rocks. Off of Hwy 18 Lincoln Rd Canyon / I’m with the vehicle“.
We reached out to Bill within minutes of getting the request. He confirmed his location but couldn’t send us any photos at the time. We prepared the request for local volunteers and within 15 minutes, we had Eddie Kochara, a local administrator, letting us know we had a volunteer en route to assess the situation.
By 9:30 p.m., Debi Oconell, a local volunteer announced on our chatroom (Lobby): “I am on the phone (3-way call) with both Chris (DR member) and the Elder who needs help. They see each other but still haven’t made contact. I am en route until recovered“.
Debi later shared: “The Elder party is A&Ox4, without any complaints. Chris (DR) has met up with Kyle (4×4 Recovery) and they are both working together to find a way for him. I am still en route“.
By 10:55 p.m., the ticket was closed, Bill, was recovered, and we had Chris Condon and Kyle working on this recovery.
Debi later sent us these photos she got from Bill, and this note about the recovery: “Unfortunately, I do not have any photos from this Recovery and most of the contact time was via a 3 and then a 4-way call between all of the individuals involved. As I was driving to the scene I was attempting to assist with finding open trails that would allow the first 2 responders (who were nearer) get to the reporting party. That area is extremely land-locked so the trails that appear as “available” and/or “open” on most of the off-road apps are actually closed off by new housing development; which was very frustrating. I actually pulled out my old Thomas map which really helped.
On a side note, the reporting party just assisted me on a recovery last week. There was a Facebook request for help on one of our local recovery pages and he immediately posted up to offer his assistance. After the recovery Bill called me (still had my number from his recovery) and stated, “I can’t believe that 3 complete strangers would work non-stop together late at night to assist someone that they did not know. And every single one of you were friendly, outgoing and just so positive with knowing that you would find me and get me home no matter what. And now I want to give back to someone like you guys and gals gave to me.”
His comment/observation totally made my night and re-emphasized why we all do this. The willingness to assist complete strangers, just because it’s the right thing to do, is so very much needed in this crazy world of ours right now.”
