A teaching moment

Thursday, December 19th, 2024, at 9:49 a.m. (PT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in Oregon. The requester, Gabriel Erickson , submitted the following information: “It’s a Tacoma 4×4 stuck on monument peak in gates just on the road in a little bit too deep of snow should just need to be pulled back down the road I am not with the vehicle right now but I will be back there soon but if you can make this recover please call me before my number is 503 930 7705 / I’m not with the vehicle / I can help cover the cost of fuel.

Our administrator, Al Fontan, contacted the requester and verified the contact information provided, GPS location, and current situation before sending the request to local volunteers. In this particular recovery, we contacted volunteers within a 25-mile radius.

The ticket was sent to volunteers at 10:09 a.m., and by 11:30 a.m., Robert Lemke, who was in Lyons and about 20 miles away, had taken on the request. The recovery was scheduled for 2:00 p.m., as the requester was not at the scene and needed a ride back to the vehicle.

By 5:00 p.m., Robert informed us that he had successfully completed this recovery in Oregon. He later shared a brief note with us.

From Robert:

“The only real information is he didn’t air down. I aired him down and he walked right out.  It was a teaching moment. “

We want to thank Robert for his help and for emphasizing the importance of airing down—a practice not widely known but highly valuable. (recovery in Oregon)
