Wednesday, October 30th, 2024, at 7:16 p.m. (MT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in South Dakota. The requester, Summer Kemock , submitted the following information: “My 1990 Chevy G-20 Van is stuck in mud/clay on BLM land. We are on the dispersed camping side of Belle Fourche Reservoir, near a vault toilet, on Suzie Peak Rd. I have my twelve year old daughter and our two dogs with me. We are full time travelers. Please help! PS. I already submitted an application but it has been about an hour and I have not heard anything back so I wanted to make sure it went through. The cell service here is not great. / I’m with the vehicle.”
Our administrator, Al Fontan, reached out to the requester to verify their contact information, GPS location, and current situation before forwarding the request to local volunteers. For this recovery effort, we contacted volunteers within a 160-mile radius.
Unfortunately, despite our efforts, no local volunteers were available. Determined to find assistance, we expanded our search and eventually connected with a nameless local hero who stepped up to help.
As always, we deeply appreciate everyone involved, from our dedicated volunteers to the incredible local support we occasionally receive. This collaborative effort was truly inspiring!
We always want to increase our presence, especially in places like this. If you would like to receive a text message when we get a request near you, create your account here: offroadportal.org/signup
