Saturday, February 17th, 2024, at 3:29 p.m. (CT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in Texas. The requester, Dustin Walls, submitted the following information: “4×4 Chevrolet 2500HD stuck in mud in the backyard / I’m with the vehicle.“
We contacted Dustin, confirmed the location, and submitted the request to local volunteers.
By 3:36 p.m., the request was out to volunteers. By 3:38 p.m., we had David Torres taking over the request.
This was a pretty long recovery. After 2 hours, David shared with us that his winch cable snapped twice. The truck was very heavy and was buried down to the frame. But he kept working on it, and he managed to get it out by 6:20 p.m. He later sent us a few photos a some notes we share down below.
From David
This was a very tricky recovery. My recoveries are often lightweight trucks being stuck in muddy roads or heavy trucks being slightly stuck in a small patch of mud surrounded by dry firm soil.
This recovery was a heavy truck stuck in very soft soil that made the truck sink in everywhere it landed.
Luckily for me I was somewhat prepared, and had a pretty solid recovery kit, including the winch, straps, snatch blocks, D-Ring shackles, and tow rings.
Due to the positioning of the truck and better more firm soil me and the truck owner decided it was better to pull the truck back. Due to limited space, we had to create a pulley system using a tree as an anchor at one point.
It took a few tries, but eventually, we got him out. His backyard was left with a few trenches, tho 😂😂😂.
Some tips, always have a few recovery tools other than a winch, my winch line snapped twice, if I didn’t had any other gear I wouldn’t have been able to able to get him out.
Before initiating the recovery walk around the area and see what are all the possible ways recover, pay attention at things you can use as anchors or things to create pulley systems with depending on how complex the recovery is. Ask for others opinions, maybe the see or know something you don’t, and make sure to clearly communicate the recovery plan with everyone there for safety and efficiency.
We appreciate David’s willingness to help and his persistence to get the job done. Awesome!
