On Saturday, January 11th, 2025, at 2:08 p.m. (MT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in Colorado. The requester, Mia Horwath, submitted the following information: “White Subaru Crosstrek AWD stuck in snow. Not a maintained road. Phones can receive messages via satellite, but they are unable to make calls. The secondary phone number is for a friend who is filling out the form as there is no service (and no photos as a result, sorry!) I also sent her the number for y’all so she can reach out herself, but she hasn’t responded to that yet, so I wanted to cover all our bases so she isn’t stranded. / I’m with the vehicle / I can help cover the cost of fuel.”
Note: We didn’t receive any photos on this recovery; the image displayed above is for illustration purposes only.
Our administrator, Al Fontan, contacted the requester and verified the contact information provided, GPS location, and current situation before sending the request to local volunteers. In this particular recovery, we contacted volunteers within a 30-mile radius.
From the group of contacted volunteers, James McCoy stepped up to take on the recovery. He was about two hours away and ready to assist. We waited a bit to see if anyone closer was available, but an hour later, James marked himself as engaging, contacted Mia, and began heading toward the request.
James was driving a 2017 Jeep JKU and was well-equipped with a winch, straps, kinetic ropes, and traction boards. Just a few minutes later, the requester informed James that a friend was coming to help, so we canceled the request.
We still want to extend our gratitude to James for his willingness to help, regardless of the distance. Thank you, James!
