How do you insure your modified rig?

How do you insure your modified rig?

Let’s talk about insurance for your offroad vehicle. We all have a ton of modifications on our vehicles, from modified suspensions or lifts to skid plates, lockers, modified bumpers, winches, and electronics inside, like GPS, radios, and all recovery or camping gear. Some might have a roof tent or a full-on camper on top of their truck.

The question is, who covers that in case of an accident? Does your regular insurance know you have all that money invested in your vehicle, or would they just turn around and cut you a check for the basic depreciated value of your 5-year-old vehicle?

This has bugged me for years. My insurance company has no clue I replaced my front axle with a custom $6,500 axle with lockers, or the locker I added on the back, or the $2,500 Warn winch I run on the front of my custom bumper. I mean, when you add all that up, if I have to replace my rig, I would probably need $25,000 or more to put something similar together.

Now, there is this new company, Tredder, which has special coverage that includes any and all accessories you added to your vehicle. I ran a quote on my modified Jeep, and to my surprise, the cost was not bad. With a $500 deductible, I got a quote for $80 a month to cover my 2017 Jeep JKU with $25,000 in upgrades and $5,000 in accessories.

My current insurance, through Progressive, costs me around $55 per month for just the basic coverage with the same deductible. This means an extra $25 per month will cover around $30,000 of extras I carry on my vehicle every time I go out exploring or playing. This is just my personal opinion, but to me, it’s a no-brainer.
