Saturday, November 9th, 2024, at 2:26 p.m. (PT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in Nevada. The requester, Tyson Munguia, submitted the following information: “We went to turn around, and the back two tires dug themselves in the sand. Two vehicles: a Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 and a Chevy Silverado 2500hd 2×4. Vehicles stuck in the sand/rocky area. Willing to pay for fuel of volunteers./ I’m with the vehicle.”
Our administrator, Al Fontan, contacted the requester and verified the contact information provided, GPS location, and current situation before sending the request to local volunteers. In this particular recovery, we contacted volunteers within a 40-mile radius.
From the group of volunteers contacted, we also reached out to Brian Glicken and Jacob Smitdt from SNORR, who are also volunteers of the portal and help in their area very actively.
Jacob took over the request, and within minutes, he had a party of volunteers en route. By 7 p.m., both vehicles were recovered.
We appreciate the help from SNORR, Jacob, and Brian, who are always ready to jump in and help.
Lets talk about donations…
One note aside: although we don’t charge for our recoveries and for organizing recoveries, we must be very transparent with requesters. Due to the increased cost of fuel, SNORR is now requesting a donation before engaging their volunteers. We will inform those asking for help about this policy.
We discussed this with Jacob, the president of this recovery organization. He explained that in the past, a lack of donations had led volunteers to cover fuel costs out of pocket, which caused many to leave the group. As a result, this new approach is being implemented. However, Jacob also emphasized that they will assist in certain cases for free if the requester genuinely cannot afford to contribute.
We recognize a similar issue on our end. Although we have a few sponsors who help cover our operational costs, donations from the people we’ve assisted are minimal. Only 1 out of 50 individuals donates after a recovery, making it quite challenging at times to sustain our system.
