Let’s avoid breaking ropes!

By our friends at Yankum Ropes!

Here are some essential tips to help you avoid breaking your recovery rope and keep it performing at its best.

 Size your rope correctly

Ensure you’re using the appropriately sized rope for your vehicle. Don’t size up, the vehicle will not have the mass to stretch the rope, making recoveries feel harsh can break recovery points. Using a rope that is too small, can overload the rope, leading to excessive stretching. Always check the weight rating of your rope and match it to your recovery vehicle’s weight.

Follow the 5-5-15 Rule

After performing five hard pulls, let your rope rest for 15 minutes. This allows the rope to return to its original length and maintain its elasticity. A stretched rope acts more like a strap or chain, which can be harsh on recovery points.

Begin your recovery pulls at 1 mph and work up to 5 mph.

If the vehicle doesn’t move an inch after two 5 mph pulls, stop and reassess the situation. It might be time to start shoveling or consider winching instead.

Inspect the Rope Before and After Use

Regularly inspect your kinetic recovery rope for any signs of wear or damage. Look for fraying, cuts, or other weaknesses that could compromise the rope’s strength. If you notice any damage, replace the rope immediately.

Keep the Rope Clean and Dry

Dirt, sand, and moisture can degrade the rope’s fibers over time. After an especially dirty recovery, clean the rope with fresh water and let it dry completely before storing it. This helps maintain the rope’s integrity and prolongs its lifespan.

 Store Properly

Store your kinetic recovery rope in a dry place away from direct sunlight. UV rays can weaken the rope’s fibers, so it’s essential to protect it from prolonged exposure.

Retire the Rope Before It Breaks

Do not wait for a rope to break, before deciding to replace it! If a rope is worn out or damaged, that is the time to retire it. You may want to push it and do just one more recovery, on a rope you know is worn out.  This can be very dangerous and very expensive, if it breaks and damages a vehicle.
