Stuck sideways on a snowed trail

Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 5:52 p.m. (MT), we received a request for help with an offroad recovery in Montana. The requester, Daniel Gemmel, submitted the following information: “Stuck east of Martin City Montana, just need a pull, 4×4 Mazda pickup, see picture, I am in cell range so please call if you are close and can help, thanks! I’m on trail number 497A off emery creek road. And then emery creek rd is off of the east road around hungry horse reservoir. Almost where it connects back up to desert mountain rd. I have been able to dig out most of the snow from the rear and front passenger tire. The picture is from when I first got stuck / I’m with the vehicle / I’m with the vehicle.”

We verified the contact information, GPS location, and situation before submitting the request to our local volunteers within a 25-mile radius.

Four minutes later, we had Eli Hanson taking over the recovery. Eli was 35 miles away, roughly from the incident or about one hour away.

The recovery was completed at 8:40 p.m. A few days later, Eli sent us a quick report and a few photos.

From Eli

Here are the notes for this recovery with photos. So got I got the request to go aid Daniel from emery creek rd just before you get to Dessert Mountain he had a tried just finished paddle boarding and tried to work his way up to Dessert Mountain when he got stuck in some snow with his Mazda truck on highway tires he attempted to self recover using a claw hammer and the paddle from his paddle board before he sent the request. Once we figured out where he was it took about hour and half to get to him. Once I got there it was just  a light tug and he was out but due to more snow I kept him hooked up and got Daniel to the main road where he was able to get out on his own from there.

We want to thank Eli and the other volunteers involved. You guys are amazing. (offroad recovery in Montana)
